In 2025, world boxing has been providing spectacles like never before with new competitions, undisputed titles on the line, and career-defining rematches. World Boxing has established two new competition formats. The World Boxing Cup and the World Boxing Challenge will bring more structure and meaning to the calendar.
World Boxing Championships
The inaugural World Boxing Championships take place in Liverpool, UK, from September 4 to 14 and will showcase top amateur talent. Over 550 boxers from more than 65 countries will compete. There is much anticipation for the event. Fans of boxing in the U.S. are ready to bet now on the outcomes of fights.
World Boxing Cup
The World Boxing Cup is an annual competition series. Male and female boxers compete throughout the year over several stages to win ranking points. They have to create a fitness environment that sustains them through the whole competition series.
The 2025 World Boxing Cup events take place in Brazil, Germany, and Kazakhstan. The series began this year with an event in Brazil, followed by another one in Kazakhstan in June. The season concludes with the finals in New Delhi, India, in November, when stage winners and other top-ranked boxers compete for the main trophy.
Undisputed title fights
In July, fans were treated to a fight between heavyweights Oleksandr Usyk and Danial Dubois at Wembley Stadium. Usyk reclaimed his undisputed heavyweight crown. Many analysts compare his exceptional skills and technical abilities with some of the best boxing champions of all time, like Muhammad Ali and Evander Holyfield.
A clear decision against Amanda Serrano in July means Katie Taylor can move on and find another opponent. The undisputed junior welterweight champion could possibly take on Chantelle Cameron, the only fighter who has beaten Taylor in her professional career.
On September 13, boxing fans can look forward to an undisputed super-middleweight clash between Canelo Alvarez and Terrence Crawford at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Both boxers are undefeated multi-division champions. Canelo has four major belts and The Ring/TBR recognition. Crawford is moving up to super-middleweight to challenge Canelo. He could become a three-division undisputed champion.
Welterweight titles on the line
On September 13, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Lewis Crocker will take on Paddy Donovan for the IBF Welterweight title. Ishmael Davis will fight Caoimhin Agyarko for the Super-Welterweight title.
A fight will take place on November 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between David Benavidez and Anthony Yarde for the WBC light heavyweight title. Brian Norman Jr. will fight Devin Haney at the same time and place for the WBO Welterweight Title.
U.K. local legends in the spotlight
In April this year, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Chris Eubank Jr. faced Conor Benn in a match dubbed Fatal Fury. Eubank Jr secured a unanimous decision, but fans are already looking forward to a rematch. It could happen in September with a higher purse and more drama.
Welterweight matchups
On April 12, Jaron “Boots” Ennis unified the IBF and WBA welterweight titles in Atlantic City when he defeated Eimantas Stanionis. A future fight between Jaron Ennis and Vergil Ortiz is being discussed. Ortiz will take on Erickson Lubin (super-welterweight) on November 9 in Fort Worth, U.S.
Blending showbiz and skill
On November 14, Jake Paul will take on WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis in an exhibition fight in Atlanta. Davis is one of the most highly regarded boxers, but instead of a rematch with Lamont Roach or taking on a rival world champion like Shakur Stevenson, he will box someone who can’t compete on a skill level. The two boxers are also not matched in weight or height. However, the controversial fight promises to be a spectacle, and it will stream exclusively on Netflix.
Will Tyson Fury return?
Tyson Fury shocked the world at the beginning of the year by retiring from boxing. Then he was in the headlines about a possible return after he reunited with his father/trainer. Fans were speculating about who he would take on. Would it be Oleksandr Usyk once more or Anthony Joshua? However, he has recently said he will not be making a comeback, so this could be unlikely to happen, as much as his fans might want it to.
